Come Away With Me

The words hung heavy as I collapsed into my chair.

How could this be happening? My mind raced as I heard my mouth forcing a response, “But maybe, we should” “Perhaps, if we . . .” I grasped for solutions as my daughter and I talked. The situation was out of our control. No words said could match the hurt we both felt. No plans could fix the immediate need. Within time we ended the phone conversation, as I started another through pressed lips. “Lord, why?” “Don’t you see what is happening here?” Fighting the salty water from spilling over the rim of my eyes, I stared at the wall in front of me. Sometimes life’s hurt is more than I want to embrace.

Have you ever wondered if God is aware of your desperate situation? Do you put your fist in His face asking if He notices the devastating details which concern you?

Sometimes, I do. I think He must smile, roll His Holy eyes, and whisper, “Dear child, when will you learn? I am big enough for your dark situation and your questions. Come away with me and remember that I am in control. I am God, and I am good at being God. Be still and let’s sit for a while.” Or maybe His exact words are more like, “Be still and know that I am God.” But you get the picture.

I did decide to pull away to a tiny garden hidden in old downtown Concord. Actually, it is a cemetery – but it is beautiful and peaceful. I leisurely strolled through the serene setting, pausing here and there to soak in the beauty. I breathed in deeply and remembered just who my God is.

He is a God of peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27 (ESV)

He is a God of beauty. “For how great is his goodness, and how great his beauty!” Zechariah 9:17 (ESV)

He cares about the details. For example, look at the details in His creation. I cannot get over the fringed edging of this yellow tulip. The intricate beauty is breathtaking. Only our God is able of such beauty and detail.

He is a God that sees me. “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Psalm 139:13-16 ESV

He is a God of love. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (ESV)

He is a God bigger than my situation. “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.” Psalm 147:5 (ESV)

He is a God that loves me and has my best interest in mind. Therefore, I choose to trust Him.

Friend, I do not know what you are facing today. Maybe you have received some bad news through a phone conversation. Perhaps, you are wondering if God is concerned with the details and disappointments in your life. Maybe, you wonder where God is today. Fair questions.

But this I do know. He cares. He sees. He is a God of details. You are not forgotten. You are not alone. He wants you to spend time with Him. He invites you and me to “Be still and Know the I am God.” It is for my and your own good. Take Him up on His offer. You will not be disappointed.

“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” Luke 12:27-28 (NIV)
