Second Chances

I did a thing last week.

I found a second-hand piece of furniture listed in a viral marketplace. I drove into “town” to meet an old tattered writing desk. She had been moved from her home (picture below as online) and was stored among the unwanted items in the garage. Her polish was worn where arms had leaned into her. Her back shelving was missing a piece. She had scratches on her face and whacky legs. Honestly, she was worn and weary.

However, as we were introduced, she stared at me and whispered the word ‘potential.’ She possessed a hidden quality waiting to be set free. So, I gave the asking price and bought her safely home. Granting her a second chance, I tenderly wiped away the dust from her body. I started a process of sanding and cleaning and repeating. Together with time, we would become better.

I stained and polished her top. I painted her legs.

Slowly, she began to find fresh hope. She was given the gift of a second chance and new life.

Have you ever needed a second chance? Do you desire a new beginning in life? Just like my now ‘new’ writing desk, I believe we all need second chances and fresh beginnings.

God knows how worn and messy this life can be. He knows of our mistakes. He is aware when we feel unwanted, and maybe even discarded. However, He sees our worth, quality, and potential. He paid the price to redeem us.

“For God so loved the world that He gave his only son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 (NIV)

He makes us new and restores us. He has claimed us and bought us into His family. He gives life when we feel tossed to the side, worn and weary.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) reads, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Even more than the new life given to my writing desk; Christ has paid the price and granted new life to you and me. My desk will see years of new usefulness, and you too have good works that God has set up for you. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

This desk is a picture of new stories and new beginnings. What is your story? Live loved today, my Friend. Step into the good works God has for you with a fresh and new beginning. Live in His newness and complete restoration because we serve a God of second chances.
