When I started this journey of motherhood, I pictured being a rational and wise mom. I had high expectations and longed for a smooth ride in the parenting world. However, reality hit and within a few short years, I became a ‘crazy’ mom saying the weirdest things.
Such as:
“Pee in the toilet – not off the front porch.”
“Stop shoving peanuts up your nose.”
“Eat all your food. Children in Africa are starving.” (Wait – What? How is my child eating his food, helping hungry kids around the world? I don’t know, but my mom said it, so I said it too.)
“Stop making holes in my walls.”
“No, you can’t hit your brother on the head with a shovel.”
“If all your friends jump off a bridge, would you jump too?”
“Don’t make me turn this car around!”
“If you don’t stop fighting, I am going to make you hug your brother for three whole minutes.”
“Don’t drink the bath water!”
“We sent the dog to a farm. He is happy there. He has lots of space to run around and play.”
“This hurts me more than it hurts you.”
Friend, if you are a mom, please tell me you can relate? What words do or did you say to your children? Do you feel as if your brain turned to mush? Me too!
However, this Mother’s Day weekend, I want to encourage us to laugh at the process and enjoy the ride. Seriously, I can testify that we are going to be ok. Who cares if we say some less than impressive statements because our children will probably do some bizarre things. So from one momma to another, Give yourself some grace – Grace upon grace. Learn to laugh at yourself and enjoy the motherhood journey.
What I am about to say, (And I speak them with a sound mind and body, thirty- two years into the parenting gig) “Happy Mother’s Day weekend!” Love well! Laugh often! Be good to yourself! Count your blessings! Because “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” Psalm 127:3 (ESV) and always remember, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV)
Happy Mother’s Day Weekend!
